Newark Castle is a large, ruined tower house dating from around 1450, and stands in the grounds of Bowhill House.
The castle is reputedly haunted by the sounds of those massacred here in 1645. 300 survivors of the Battle of Philiphaugh - which included women and stable boys - were put to death and brutally slaughtered by the Covenanters.
